Mail-to-Weblog II

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 6:33 PM)

If this message shows up on the homepage of the beta site, then mail-to-weblog is working for the Weblog II plugin.

No rules-changes this time, it works exactly the same way as the mail-to-weblog for the old plugin.

There's one minor difference: the old plugin doesn't work correctly if you put a / at the front of the path where your weblog resides. This one will work whether the slash is there or not.

Macro List Reorganized

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

I've reorganized the list of weblog macros to make it more readable and useful. Also added a few more descriptions to the macros.

wizard to convert weblog to weblog II

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

If you'd like to convert a weblog to a weblog II page, there's now a wizard to make this pretty easy.

It doesn't do ANYTHING to convert templates from the old page to the new one, so the new weblog will just use the default templates. This may change before the plugin is released to the public, but hopefully this is enough to get more of the people on this list to actually use the new plugin.

You'll find the plugin at yourSiteURL/__wizards__

Look at Greg's Site

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

Greg Pierce has upgraded his weblog to the new plugin. Check it out, he's using a very cool feature that most of you don't know about.

The first seven days on the weblog all show the full text for each item, but the last ten days (at the bottom) show only the titles with links to the full items. Pretty darn cool if I do say so myself.

From what I've seen, he and Steve are using more of the advanced features than anyone else, at least so far. Steve's using channels and a totally customized weblog calendar (see his "time machine" at the top right of his weblog pages).

It would be great if some of the other folks around here -- especially those who pestered me mercilessly for this plugin -- could try pushing the limits a little. (That's not a complaint, just a statement of fact. The more testing it gets, the sooner it will be done.)

Updating Weblog II Plugin

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

The Weblog II plugin is being updated this evening. Things may be wacky for a little while... such is the nature of beta software!

The primary change is that caching for the weblog.days macro has been re-enabled, after being disabled for the last five months.

There are two things to look for, as beta testers:

  1. Examples where a cache isn't being flushed when it should be
  2. General errors that may have cropped up as a result of the numerous changes made to Conversant's caching mechanism in the last week or two. (But which are being "rolled out" today.)

These changes should be installed on the servers within the next hour or so. Then the servers will be restarted, so I expect downtime of perhaps 20 minutes.

Change to #weblog.url, and the new #weblog.archiveDatePath

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

The macro #weblog.URL has been updated. It now allows you to include some additional attributes so that the URL it returns links to a specific date, a date relative to the current time, or a date relative to the first day displayed on the weblog. An additional attribute allows you to specify that the URL should actually point to the RSS version of the weblog.

Greg Pierce requested the above enhancements, so that he could have a "last year at this time" section on his weblog which would automatically load the RSS feed for the previous year.

Along these same links, a new macro is available called, "#weblog.archiveDatePath". This macro returns only the date portion of the URL, and has all the same options as the new features in #weblog.URL.

Read more about these new features in messages in this discussion thread.

Removing Items From a Weblog

(by Seth Dillingham, @ 7:00 PM)

Today I found and fixed a bug which made it difficult to remove items from the weblog II pages.

I'm specifically referring to removing items from the weblog, NOT deleting messages (which also removes the item from all weblogs). This is done by first putting your weblog into "edit mode" and then clicking on the button to remove whichever item you want removed.
